Today is just a massive day of news.

This ‘Enable 3G’ option can be found in the latest iPhone 2.0 Beta 5 that has been distributed to developers. This option is normally hidden but one developer has claimed to have activated it.

After seeing this image i decided to decrypt the beta5 rootfs dmg and check out the network.plist and what do you know..i found it

{
items = (
{
cell = PSGroupCell;
id = “ENABLE_3G_GROUP”;
},
{
cell = PSSwitchCell;
default = YES;
get = “is3GEnabled:”;
label = “ENABLE_3G”;
set = “set3GIsEnabled:specifier:”;
},
},
{
cell = PSTitleValueCell;
label = “3G_TEXT”;
},
{

if you dont know what all this code is about, this section (part of a mass code in network.plist) means the 3G option is present meaning the image is legitimate.

Although the iPhone 2.0 firmware includes the 3G code, current iPhone owners will not be able to take adavantage of it without buying a new iPhone. It is also noted that Apple is giving users the option to switch to EDGE speeds in order to increase battery life due to the fact that 3G has higher power consumption.

Be sure to check back soon as news about the 3G iPhone seems to being coming in left, right and center as the Worldwide Developers Conference draws near and is expected to be the moment when Apple reveals the second generation iPhone.

People who are wanting to order either iPhone will find both models are ‘currently unavailable.’

Obviously this must mean something as you would not expect Apple to just ‘run out’ of iPhones and would try to keep a constant flow unless something was up.

Many people believe (including myself) that Apple has stopped (or lowered) production of iPhone to get ready for the release of the second generation sometime next month. This latest news supports this suggestion even more.

Keep checking back to iPhoneAE for all the latest news on everything iPhone

It’s coming. For the first time, we have solid information that the one and only iPhone is coming down under. In what could be considered a surprising annoucment, Vodafone has isseud a release that confirms it will be carrying the iPhone not only in Down Under, but in many other countries, including our neighbours (must not make sheep joke) New Zealand. A while ago some keen eyed law-types noted of a rule that potentially stops a phone having one carrier, and this news has resurfaced once again. The announcment was cleverly worder and didn’t mention any deal exclusivity, so mine (and therefore iPhoneAE’s) money is on several carriers having the iPhone, as well as Apple selling an unlocked version. This is truly excellent news for us Aussies, but still no date of arrival, but a June release sounds good with the WWDC and the new Sydney flagship store opening. Keep yours eyes peeled because I don’t doubt the’ll be more news coming our way soon. (Oh yeah, the yellow is for Optus, Blue for Telstra)

The iPhone Dev Team have been working solidly for many months to bring us the most powerful iPhone tool yet, Pwnage. It modifies your bootloader to allow unsigned code (non-apple-authorized firmware or IPSW) to be loaded onto your iPhone, through iTunes. Also included in the pack is a IPSW creator that allows you to edit the default Apple firmware to be jailbroken, unlocked and activated. That’s right, no more lengthy (yes, 45 seconds is a long time!) unlock procedures, you can now have your iPhone hacked right through iTunes, easy! Currently, only the mac version is available, but within a few days the windows version will also be out.

On behalf of everyone at iPhoneAE, well done Dev Team!

The keen eyed folks over at 9to5mac.com have spotted a job application which says iPhone in, and somewhat radically claimed that a second generation iPhone was coming to Australia. Although we here at iPhone Australia (would it be rich to call us the iPhone in Aus experts?) have to disagree, it is none the less interesting, and does confirm that the iPhone will be coming to Australia (which we knew it would at some point anyway) and more than likely with Telstra, and perhaps most interesting is that the contract is for 2-3 months, which could mean that the timeframe for an Australian launch is just that, 2-3 months, I certainly hope so (not least because we said it first!).

After a meeting with Taiwanese Electronics companies, there has been confirmation that a 3G iPhone is due out in Q2 (april - june) of this year.

The original hold back on producing a 3G iPhone was the wireless chip consumed to much power. But after recent advances in this technology, there have been reports that this issue has been addressed.
AT&T also announced in early Feb that they will be deploying 3G technology to 80 cities around America in 2008.

So all this news tied together really starts to confirm that the 3G iPhone really isn’t all that far away for America. Question is, what, or even better, when will Sir Jobs enter the Australian mobile industry?
Also will be interesting what will be announced on March 6th at the iPhone software developers conference.

Okay, so i know i said iNdependence was the best way to jailbreak, activitate and unlock a 1.1.4 iPhone…but that was before.

ZiPhone 2.5 is the new method on the block and it is fantastic!

In literally 2 clicks, one to open ZiPhone and one to click the ‘Do It All!’ button and you will end up with an iPhone that is running 1.1.4, on the 04.04.05_G baseband which allows to to use the google maps location feature and has installer.app already installed within just 5 minutes.

It also downgrades the bootloader from 4.6 to 3.9. Many have said this is risky but in my personal experience (around 37 phones within the last week) i havent had a single problem.

Great work everyone in the ZiPhone team and looking forward to future releases.

Due to this being an extremely easy method avaliable to both mac and pc I will write up a guide with the simple instructions and what things are good to install after its done (e.g. BSD Subsystem, OpenSSH etc.)

Get ZiPhone 2.5 Windows or Mac and enjoy the freedom

Have Fun!
