Thanks to one of members, Murty, we have been alerted to the first iPhone 1.1.3 hack that has been released. Saldy at the moment it is PC only as it relies on iBrickr but hopefully we will see a Mac version on the horizon.

To quote the author of the hack, “As all upgrades are risky, this one is doubly so. You may have to restore your phone using iTunes and start again if it fails. Make sure to back up first!“, and I couldn’t agree more. It took two attempts for me to get the hack working. And if it hadn’t been for my backup, I would have lost everything.

How does it work? Well here is what it does.

• iBrickr grabs the 1.1.3 iPhone firmware image and extracts, decrypts, and decompresses the disk image.
• Then it applies a patch, jailbreaking the disk image and activating it, and also installing Installer.app.
• It uploads this new modified image to the phone, as 113_upgrade_image.bin.
• The “1.1.3 soft upgrade” app flashes the phone with the image and reboots.
• You have a perfect, jailbroken, upgraded 1.1.3 phone, with all your settings and music intact!

The internet is abuzz with talk of a new iPhone firmware 1.1.3, touting new features such as Voice Recording and Disk Mode, two features requested for since the initial annoucment of Steve Jobs’ and minimalistic design’s lovechild (the iPhone fool!). When it will arrive is a question of great debate but supposedly it will be in the very near future. Undoubtedly this will put Apple 1 up on the unlocking score board with some other ingenious way of blocking out the hacking geniuses of the iPhone world.

Our European friends over in Germany have now got the opportunity to get their hands on an officially unlocked iPhone handset after T-Mobile’s arch rivals Vodafone filed a court injunction, some legal mumbo jumbo later and, in the words of Steve Jobs, BOOM!, unlocked iPhones for all (or all that could afford the 999 euro price tag). This makes the Germans the first to get their hands on the unlocked iphone, with France following suit due to some French law dictating that all handsets must have the ability to be unlocked. I am off to read through a few Aussie law books to see if there is any ancient law saying iPhones must be sold in Australia!

Yes, it is true, Apple has today released a new software update, great right, no, your awesome new unlocked jesus phone is now bricked (if you are/were foolish enough to install the update). Although adding iTunes WiFi support, 3rd party apps are dead, and so is your iPhone if you unlocked or installed apps on it. Though still fairly easy to not install the update, those who don’t read iPhoneAE (or any of the rest of the internet) will end up with a great piece of building material, or a brick. After trawling through literally thousands of comments I have come up with the following conclusion:
Foreign iPhone owners: Crying/Not Updating/Whinging
iPhone hacksters: Not Updating/ Having a whinge (for good reason)
iPhone haters: Laughing/Wallowing in self-hatred as they should be!

The folks over at iPhone Dev Wiki (here) have released a FREE simple GUI (Graphic User Interface) to unlock your iPhone. This means us aussies can use an iPhone FULLY in aus, yay! Today is a great day for iPhone owners everywhere (especially those not living in America). The fellows over at iphonesimfree.com have managed to unlock the iPhone, minus the fiddly opening, soldering etc. required in the previous method. They will begin to SELL (AAAAWWWWWW!!) the software online next week. If hard proof is your thing head over to Engadget, they even have a video (as well as a unlocked iPhone, lucky sods!!). The announcement was closely followed by another unlocking revelation, iphoneunlocking.com, of uniquephones.com, will also begin selling unlock software after breaking Apple and AT&T close, loving embrace. Some super genius iPhone geek people having been working solid for the past couple of months to get us an unlock and, well, it has finally arrived, for the tech savvy amongst us that is.
