iNdependence is good, ZiPhone 2.5 is better!

Posted by Peter  Published in General iPhone News, Hacks, New Firmware

ziphone.jpg

Okay, so i know i said iNdependence was the best way to jailbreak, activitate and unlock a 1.1.4 iPhone…but that was before.

ZiPhone 2.5 is the new method on the block and it is fantastic!

In literally 2 clicks, one to open ZiPhone and one to click the ‘Do It All!’ button and you will end up with an iPhone that is running 1.1.4, on the 04.04.05_G baseband which allows to to use the google maps location feature and has installer.app already installed within just 5 minutes.

It also downgrades the bootloader from 4.6 to 3.9. Many have said this is risky but in my personal experience (around 37 phones within the last week) i havent had a single problem.

Great work everyone in the ZiPhone team and looking forward to future releases.

Due to this being an extremely easy method avaliable to both mac and pc I will write up a guide with the simple instructions and what things are good to install after its done (e.g. BSD Subsystem, OpenSSH etc.)

Get ZiPhone 2.5 Windows or Mac and enjoy the freedom

 Have Fun!

iPhone 1.1.3 SMS ordering problem

Posted by Julian  Published in Evil Fruit Co., Hacks, iPhone in Australia

iPhone SMS After the upgrade many Australian users may find that the order of SMS’s has gone out of wack. This is due to the fact that the patch now has the iPhone looking to your carriers clock for the time. By default the iPhone worked on US time, your carrier is AUS time. This is where the issue kicks in. Good news is it is easy to fix however.

To fix it just change your iPhone to auto-sync with the network so the clocks get back in sync. Click here for instructions from the Apple site

1.1.3 Hacked - Get the goss here

Posted by Julian  Published in Evil Fruit Co., Hacks, Unlocking

iPhone gives you wingsThanks to one of members, Murty, we have been alerted to the first iPhone 1.1.3 hack that has been released. Saldy at the moment it is PC only as it relies on iBrickr but hopefully we will see a Mac version on the horizon.

To quote the author of the hack, “As all upgrades are risky, this one is doubly so. You may have to restore your phone using iTunes and start again if it fails. Make sure to back up first!“, and I couldn’t agree more. It took two attempts for me to get the hack working. And if it hadn’t been for my backup, I would have lost everything.

How does it work? Well here is what it does.

  • iBrickr grabs the 1.1.3 iPhone firmware image and extracts, decrypts, and decompresses the disk image.
  • Then it applies a patch, jailbreaking the disk image and activating it, and also installing Installer.app.
  • It uploads this new modified image to the phone, as 113_upgrade_image.bin.
  • The “1.1.3 soft upgrade” app flashes the phone with the image and reboots.
  • You have a perfect, jailbroken, upgraded 1.1.3 phone, with all your settings and music intact!

Does your iPhone need accupuncture?

Posted by Julian  Published in Hacks, iDestruction

What many people reading here will probably not know is that I am half deaf. Due to an incident in my childhood (not inclusive of chainsaws or other sharp implements) I lost just over 50% of my hearing. This has created numerous issues of the years that have caused me to sound like my grandfather as I yell “Turn it up!”

The iPhone, like many phones out there, doesn’t have the loudest speaker volume. Don’t get me wrong, it is more than adequate for an average user, but for me it is not quite enough. Well last week some daring modders have suggested a very simple yet warrant voiding trick (not that warranties really matter in Aus as we aren’t covered anyway)

To increase the volume all you need to do is pierce the thin plastic that covers the speakers at the bottom of the iPhone with a needle. This simple trick will increase your sound volume by up to 40%!!!

Be warned, this is a major increase in volume and my be too loud for some. But for me, it is a welcome change and I’m not looking back.

iPhone as a Mac Webcam - You Bet!

Posted by Julian  Published in Hacks, iPab

iPhone webcamThe folks over at Ecamm network the creator of iGlasses, one of my most used utilities, have just released a beta of iPhoneCam that allows for users to stream video from their iPhone camera over Wi-Fi to any Mac video application such as iChat, Photo Booth or Skype. Best of all, they have managed to be ble to get the camera to record at stream at up to 30 fps. Not bad for a camera developed as a still capture only device.

How does it work? Well, the iPhone app and the Mac component find each other using Bonjour (zeroconf). There’s absolutely no configuration necessary. If there’s an iPhone-based camera available, the Mac finds it and uses it automatically. Pretty easy stuff!

Currently the app is in early beta and has a couple of flaws. First, it is video only, no audio. So you will still need separate mic. Also, it is a Mac only app at this point (sorry Windows users..isn’t it time to buy a Mac yet?)

Wan’t to give it a whirl? The click here to try it out. Or, you can click here to see brief movie of the app in action

Instant (nearly) 1.1.1 Jailbreak available

Posted by Jack  Published in Hacks

It is now even easier than ever to jailbreak your iPhone, and then unlock it, even in Apple’s evil (yet really cool) 1.1.1 update. Just go to jailbreakme.com on your iPhone and, in the immortal words of El Jobso, BOOM!, you’re jailbreaked (or is it jailbroken?), you can then use the new AnySim, and once again BOOM! iPhone 1.1.1, Once again, Welcome to Aus!!

P.S. I was also thinking of writing a tutorial from getting your iPhone from total brand new to totally modified, post if you want me to in the comments.

Hack to bypass AT&T registration released

Posted by Jack  Published in Hacks

Famous reverse engineer (I don’t know what it is either) Jon Lech Johansen has claimed to be able to ‘Activate’ the iPhone without signing up for the two-year, lock-in contract with AT&T (or AT&EVIL). The hack will not let the iPhonian use mobile services (calling,SMS etc.) but WILL let the user play around with the iPod and wi-fi features of the iPhone. He has published something he calls ‘Phone Activation Server v1.0′. It’s not all that simple, as you still need a fair bit of knoledge of manipulating host files (Whaaat?) and the like to be able to pull it off. GO JLJ!!! iPhone-ae will keep you updated
