It’s a sad day today when I have to announce that the first iPhone virus (and sadly, I guess, the first of many) is now out in the wilderness and apparently it’s catchy. Many say that it is impossible for those using OSX to get viruses. And, as we all know, the iPhone uses the same famed OS. But the reality is that users can still choose to manually install the virus themselves. This is called stupidity. But sadly, with the iPhone mod scene so active, many users feel that they can download safely any app on the AppTap. The reality is that this is false.
This week an apparently 11 year old student put an app onto the sources lists called “iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep”. t has nothing to do with 1.1.3 and is instead a nasty little trojan.
While installing it does nothing, uninstalling it will damage a pile of programs in the iPhone’s bin folder like Erica’s Utilities, OpenSSH, Doom, and Launcher. Now these can all be reinstalled, it is a pain and the ass and sadly looks like a sign of things to come.
Good news is that as far as we are aware, the app has been removed and the child’s father was alerted. But if you do see this floating around, AVOID IT!
