After a meeting with Taiwanese Electronics companies, there has been confirmation that a 3G iPhone is due out in Q2 (april - june) of this year.

The original hold back on producing a 3G iPhone was the wireless chip consumed to much power. But after recent advances in this technology, there have been reports that this issue has been addressed.
AT&T also announced in early Feb that they will be deploying 3G technology to 80 cities around America in 2008.

So all this news tied together really starts to confirm that the 3G iPhone really isn’t all that far away for America. Question is, what, or even better, when will Sir Jobs enter the Australian mobile industry?
Also will be interesting what will be announced on March 6th at the iPhone software developers conference.

Okay, so i know i said iNdependence was the best way to jailbreak, activitate and unlock a 1.1.4 iPhone…but that was before.

 ZiPhone 2.5 is the new method on the block and it is fantastic!

 In literally 2 clicks, one to open ZiPhone and one to click the ‘Do It All!’ button and you will end up with an iPhone that is running 1.1.4, on the 04.04.05_G baseband which allows to to use the google maps location feature and has installer.app already installed within just 5 minutes.

It also downgrades the bootloader from 4.6 to 3.9. Many have said this is risky but in my personal experience (around 37 phones within the last week) i havent had a single problem.

 Great work everyone in the ZiPhone team and looking forward to future releases.

Due to this being an extremely easy method avaliable to both mac and pc I will write up a guide with the simple instructions and what things are good to install after its done (e.g. BSD Subsystem, OpenSSH etc.)

The other day we posted about Google’s new iPhone optimised interface. Well, just in time for Macworld they have released a new version which is faster, cleaner and more finger friendly than ever.  The upgrade has boosted speed, increases the flexibility in arranging tabs and options, adds automatic refresh to the Gmail inbox and brings iGoogle gadgets to the cellphone.

Like the typical Google page,it can be customised to display various Google widgets including RSS feeds, crosswords, Gmail, etc but is now on a single column tabbed screen.

So next Tuesday is THE day for all us MacAddicts to crouch down round our monitors as we do every year to wait for the “bang” the Steve will pull out of his hat for the year. Yes, of course I refer to Macworld 08.

This year, thanks to MacRumors.com, they have offered a live streaming service specially sized for the iPhone, so no matter where you are, you can watch steve in realtime on the mobile device.

All you have to do is point your iPhone’s Safari browser to MacRumorsLive.com on the day to see Steve in all his (somewhat miniature) glory. The site is not up yet, but will be activated clower to the event. Lets hope for some juice Aussie iPhone news from the event.

We all remember that ludicrous scene from Tomorrow Never Dies where James Bond controls his Astin Martin with his Sony Ericcson. Well it may not be as far fetched as it sounds if Delphi get there way. Gizmodo came across the Delphi stand on the last day of CES and saw their latest prototype of an iPhone web app that they had controlling a car in the stand.

With the iPhone the user could access core car stats, open and close doors and windows, set custom seat positioning and even start the ignition!

T minus four days and counting. Steve Jobs’ Macworld 2008 keynote is next Tuesday and at this point we only know one thing for sure: something big is coming from Apple. Maybe not one single iceberg-sized thing, but this year we believe the Boom Count™ is going to be so high that Apple had to take their new big irons out of the way to clear the launching pad.

And if it wasn’t enough, there’s plenty of evidence that points out the magnitude and importance of next week’s announcements:

It’s a sad day today when I have to announce that the first iPhone virus (and sadly, I guess, the first of many) is now out in the wilderness and apparently it’s catchy.Many say that it is impossible for those using OSX to get viruses. And, as we all know, the iPhone uses the same famed OS. But the reality is that users can still choose to manually install the virus themselves. This is called stupidity.But sadly, with the iPhone mod scene so active, many users feel that they can download safely any app on the AppTap. The reality is that this is false.

This week an apparently 11 year old student put an app onto the sources lists called “iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep”. t has nothing to do with 1.1.3 and is instead a nasty little trojan.

While installing it does nothing, uninstalling it will damage a pile of programs in the iPhone’s bin folder like Erica’s Utilities, OpenSSH, Doom, and Launcher. Now these can all be reinstalled, it is a pain and the ass and sadly looks like a sign of things to come.

Good news is that as far as we are aware, the app has been removed and the child’s father was alerted. But if you do see this floating around, AVOID IT!

Randall Stepherson aka Mr. AT&T, has outed the 3G iPhone while talking to his uber rich pals at the Churchill Club in Santa Clara (he obviously took the name to heart thinking he was the fat jolly man with a red coat!) saying “You’ll have it next year” the device will (according to Mr AT&T anyway!), run on the AT&T network and El Jobso “will dictate what the price of the phone is”. Hopefully this means when the iPhone is released in Aus, it will be available in the 3G version, fingers crossed people!
