Its been a while since really big news has been posted on iPhoneAE. So what does one do when this happens?
Create a massive post with all the stuff that has been happening in the Apple world!!!
It might be long so heres a run down of how it will be set out.
All the biggest news will be up the top. It wont be in order but it will be the latest of the latest news. Then after all that there will just be some mini links to news that is interesting…but not as interesting as the big news. Most, if not all news will be iPhone related but there may be a few little extra’s thrown in there.
So here we go…while we were sleeping…
Apple Releases 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2
On July 11th, the massive release day for the iPhone 2G, Apple released firmware 2.0 (5A345&5A347 See Below) for the 1st generation iPhone and the iPhone 3G. First impressions were mixed but it ended up being an alright release except for a few hiccups. Since then, Apple has released 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 firmwares.
Although they are updates all they don’t introduce any new features and are only bug fixes.
Australia iPhone3G Shortages Causes An Uproar
The iPhone3G came very close to selling out on the very first day here in Australia and a week from its release, it was near impossible to find them anywhere. Most people didnt mind the wait, but what they did mind was not knowing how long that wait might be. No provider in Australia could give a definite response as to when more iPhone3G’s would be entering the country. What was even worse was that some stores were actually signing people up on the 11th, but they did not receive there phones until early August.
iPhone3G’s are now slowly but surely beginning to appear in Optus, Vodafone and Telstra stores around Australia but stock is still pretty limited.
iPhone3G Yellow Tinge Screen Issue
When the iPhone3G was first released, many people believed that the screen had an extreme yellow tinge
compared to the older iPhone. This yellow, according to Apple, was deliberate. They chose to move away from the old blue calibration to yellow as it produced clearer imagery and deeper, richer blacks. However, Apple quickly released Firmware 2.0 5A347 which toned the yellow down a bit.
PwnageTool Released
Probably the biggest question everybody was asking after the release of 2.0 was “When will the iPhone (1st Gen &3G) on 2.0 be jailbroken and unlocked?”
Well the iPhone-Dev team release the newest version of PwnageTool just 8 days after release. As Apple updated firmware versions the dev team updated PwnageTool which is currently version 2.0.1
Although this can activate, jailbreak and unlock the 1st gen iPhone on 2.0.1 (2.0.2 update coming soon) it can only jailbreak and activate the iPhone3G but not unlock. But have no fear, the dev-team have people working around the clock trying to find an unlock.
Included now is Cydia as well as the Installer 4 beta. Third-party non-app store apps for 2.0 are slowly appearing as they are upgraded to be used on the new famework
MobileMe Up, Down, Up, Down Again, Up…
Well its no secret that Apple had a few problems with the launch of MobileMe. From delayed push functioning to loss of emails, most MobileMe subscribers around the world seemed to find something wrong
with the service. However, some lucky people (including me) had no problems at all and MobileMe worked smoothly and soundly. Kudos to Apple for admitting their mistakes and for all the inconvenience caused they have extended accounts/trials up to an extra 120 days giving some people a total of 180 days free.
iPhone3G Had Connectivity Issues…But Might Not Anymore Thanks To 2.0.2
From the moment of release some people had connectivity issues with their iPhone3G’s. Until just recently Apple had not commented on these problems. But on August 18th, Steve Jobs (or someone writing on behalf of Steve Jobs) admitted that connectivity issues affect around 2% of all iPhone3G’s shipped and a update would be released soon to fix the problem. That was before firmware 2.0.2.
Some people have reported that it has corrected connectivity issues but only time will tell if it actually fixes the 3G bug.

Nice summerisation. It’s been crazy in iPhone land lately, the original iPhone launch went relatively smoothly, not so this one. Lets hope they iron out all the kinks soon!
Anthony.
The are you rich? app is a classic. can’t believe that apparently 8 people brought it. LOL
some people are too rich to have any sense.

Something a bit off topic that might help if your looking for an iphone cover.
I’ve been looking a covers that would best protect my new iPhone if I was unlucky enough to drop it, Elano sell a great plastic cover, you can get them a Strathfields Car Audio for $30, it doesn’t scratch the phone while it inside the cover….. they seem better than the Belkin covers… anyway there you go
