I have to pay at least $99 a month to get a measly 1Gb of data? That completely defeats the purpose of a mobile device with a first class browser and third party, data-intensive applications.

Let’s hope Telstra or Vodafone offer better data limits to those who intend to make full use of iPhone 3G’s Internet capabilities.

199 before tax americans advertise shit before tax bcause every state has a different tax thingo… why? just another retarded american thing so technically its true…… we then also have to thank GST and import taxes so YAY TAXES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (import tax is roughly 40% of RRP, thats why apple computers here cost so god damn much)

Iphone used to cost $399 upfront on AT&T and AT&T wasn’t allowed to discount it.

Apple said it will sell the iphone for $199 by allowing AT&T to discount it if ppl go on their 2 years contract

the real cost of iphone was never $199

out in australia..the iphone would cost around $220 if u convert from usd to aud ..but thats $220 + say $49 cap for 2 years …the phone is not $220…

what made u guys think its gonna be that cheap ?

i cant believe ppl didnt get that..as someone pointed out f*** retards..

mygif
Alfy said in July 3rd, 2008 at 11:49 pm

Un #^@%# believable!

What a joke! Even the rumours of around $400 AUD didn’t come close! What happened to $199US??? 4 times the price! Yet again the Australian public gets a royal rogering. We are always last and ALWAYS get screwed. Very annoying! As an (unsatisfied) Optus customer I REALLY REALLY hope that Vodaphone or (hopefully) 3 comes up with something better for the iPhones sake. I don’t hold much hope for Telstra as our illustrious national carrier is a rip-off merchant anyway. Come on Vodaphone - show Optus how business is done.

mygif
ANdy said in July 3rd, 2008 at 11:56 pm

Get over the price!!! The plans are good.
The N95 still cost $1150 out right in some stores that i have seen and thats without a plan.
I am on a $79 cap at the moment, the massive difference is i don’t have any data at all.
So i think that with 700mb of data very good.
I think people expect so much for nothing. Wake up in australia we are so behind. So you cant expect plan with data to be cheap when we in australia are not use to having mobile plans with data at all.

mygif
ANdy said in July 4th, 2008 at 12:00 am

Alfy you retard!! $800 is for it out right!!!
$199 in america with a 2 year contract for the 8g iphone. You get it for $2 a month on the $79 plan idiot! Read and understand before posting.

mygif
Domkestic said in July 4th, 2008 at 12:15 am

I’m not being sensitive with the tax matter… but joel… you’ve been looking at different picture mate. there are two different taxing categories … 1. personal use 2. commercial use

anyway, get a life people. It was obviously $199 with 2 yrs contract. get a common sense…

Let’s talk out of money you spend for your plan. Then there is a way you can possibly pay nothing for the phone… So what. In that sense, it’s even cheaper than what Steve said ?

why you people whinning about the price without getting 2yrs contract ??? Jesus… and don’t try to put America and Australia on same level. they are two different countries, learn to accept difference.

I think this is still good because we (who can afford iPhone without whinning ) don’t have to see ‘anybody’ bringing iPhone on the street.

mygif
liam said in July 4th, 2008 at 12:49 am

what are the advantages and disadvantages of the cap plans?

mygif
ANdy said in July 4th, 2008 at 1:21 am

Liam- with the cap plan eg. $79 cap you get $550 worth of calls and text which is at a higer call rate but still good value when you use the phone alot. You also get the 700mb of data. Its still alot of data because you are not downloading massive files you are just brousing.

With the uncaped plans you pay for what you use at a cheaper call rate, more for some one who don’t make alot of calls.

both the cap and the un caped plas come with data so good news either plan you go on.

brockyoz said in July 4th, 2008 at 3:11 am

I am still waiting to see if anyone knows anything about where they are going to be sold? How they are going to organise the pre-orders etc. I noticed when a friend and I pre-ordered with Optus our invoice numbers were around the 9000 mark (assuming they went in sequential order). Because it isn’t just going to be a quick process of going in and buying a phone and leaving for those on a contract at least, it will take quite a long time to process each customer. Plus because there is no up-front cost for the phone, I assume they will just credit our accounts with the deposit paid. Biggest thing for me at the moment is what Optus stores they release it in, being from the country it does make a difference whether or not it goes regional. Otherwise I have a 4 hour trip ahead of me to Melbourne to pick mine up on the day! Wonder if the midnight release will happen too?

mygif
jack johnson said in July 4th, 2008 at 3:13 am

Well, I am from the usa, i was hoping australia would be cheaper than usd for iphone prepaid, guess not. For all of you complaining about the price, do what we do in the usa, we vote and ask for change in your laws regarding taxes. Otherwise bear the hardship and stop whining.

mygif
iLuke said in July 4th, 2008 at 6:14 am

WOO!
Why the hell is everyone complainin, for around 900$ you can have a fully unlocked iphone! (optus charge 80$ for unlock code)… I’m thinking, will buy this on prepaid, tak advantage of the free 400$ and unlimited data until the end of august… and then, unlock it at a later date when ‘Three’ has iphone plans, and switch it over to them with a simple sim card swap! im happy, i was expecting it to be over 1000$… WOOHOO! ONE WEEK LEFT!

mygif
BigBoy said in July 4th, 2008 at 7:59 am

I’m glad I got my 16GB for AU$600 from the states six months ago. These prices and plans are outrageous. I can’t believe the data allowances are so shit? And Optus’ 3G network is pretty poor anyway.

I’ll wait to see what Telstra has to offer, but it would have to be better than this…

mygif
Roger said in July 4th, 2008 at 10:27 am

These plans are ridiculous. I, for one, am going to wait until 3 releases the iphone.

3 just recently increased their cap benefits, and lowered the handset cost on those plans. The nokia N95 8GB is now free on a $49 Cap. Considering the actual phone retails at 3 for $1199, I think we’ll see the best prices for an iPhone on 3.

Take this optus and voda:

3’s $49 Cap gets you $350 worth of calls and 300 mins of free talk. And all their other plans kick arse.

I don’t care that I won’t have one in the first week, that enables me to see what people think of them. But I will be laughing when 3 releases the best pricing and everyone starts complaining how crap optus, telstra and vodafone are!

mygif
charlieh said in July 4th, 2008 at 12:29 pm

I think that the optus plans are pretty good and its good that they have plenty of options. i think i would go on the plan and pay $49 a month and go for the 12 month plan at $47 soo for the 16gb one so i can get it over and done with in the next 12 months. hopefully vodafone bring a better plan out though because i would rather go with vodafone than optus.

mygif
Andy said in July 4th, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Can someone explain something to me. I’ve been a pre-paid Optus customer for years and just simply purchase a $30 recharge (or whatever amount I need) and load it onto the phone. What’s this Turbo Cap stuff? Is it the same as a recharge or it some different form of pre-paid?

mygif
jack said in July 4th, 2008 at 1:07 pm

when u recharge on prepaid, you have a option to choose turbocap which gives u more credit but it has a limit of one month ..so basically you recharge every month

if you do not use turbocap, you get only $30 but have 6 months to use it.

mygif
jack said in July 4th, 2008 at 1:10 pm

Honestly, I find 3’s pricing and caps much more worth the money than Optus, Vodafone or Telstra. Obviously a cap on certain provider might suit you depending on your usage, but 3’s caps and data allowances seem to beat other providers easy.

I cant wait to go on a 3 iphone. Optus and especially Telstra is a rip off. Vodafone’s network is so bad..i wouldnt even think about considering it.

mygif
Nin said in July 4th, 2008 at 1:12 pm

If there is considerable difference in iphone pricing between countries, you should be able to get an iphone cheaper on ebay in the next few weeks. So my advice is, dont get ripped off but wait till the end of July and see if you get a better price than offered by Australian telcos.

mygif
M said in July 4th, 2008 at 2:02 pm

If you say that Optus plan is ridiculous… you probably are too young or too tight.

I subscribed to Telstra iphone information … and got a phone call from Telstra telemarketer.

It seemed Telstra is now trying hard to catch up with other carriers as they kind of started late.

Anyway, I asked him few question about plan…

$89 plan… provides call& txt credit of $550 or something and data of 20MB

20 MB
20 MB
20 MB
20 MB
20 MB
20 MB

WTF

and the funny thing was … the guy was trying to convince me … he was like “you also have 20MB data which is absolutely enough for mobile phone use”

I wanted to say “Mate, which world are you from ? couple of Youtube video would be more than 20MB !!?!?!”

But I’m a person who can’t easily hang up marketing calls or swear at those people. So I was just nice to him… but THAT WAS WHAT REALLY RIDICULOUS PLAN IS… It’s kinda irony that Telstra previously disregarded old iphone because it doens’t suit to their “futuristic 3G world”

THAT FUTURISTIC mobile company set name of 20MB browsing pack as “Frequent Users”. If 20MB is meant to be medium use(according to their pricing plan), what’s the point of 3G network ?

Excess usage -> $1 per MB

Holly…

can’t understand what they thinking …
The cost is getting cheaper… but it seems
their pricing has never never been changed
in past 10 years ?

Anyway, another finding is he suggest me to get the contract then they will send simcard and document where I can claim for my iphone at mobile phone shop.

mygif
M said in July 4th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

yeah 3 is probably cheapest mobile plan at the moment… I used to use 3 … it was cheap… but I quit in the middle of contract because of poor reception issue. It was quite a while ago, so not sure about current status

mygif
Andy said in July 4th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Thanks Jack - so can you still use the iPhone on Optus pre-paid if you just do a normal recharge (without Turbo Cap)? I assume you’d get the $30 credit for calls/sms etc. and you’d be unable to go online.

mygif
dpearman said in July 4th, 2008 at 2:53 pm

when will people start to realise that we are lucky to have the iphone through 3 carries and a possibility of 4 if 3 get on board. At least we have a choice unlike other countries. It is a great device and the plans are not that bad, considering.

just get it and stop complaining as you will love it!!!

mygif
istara said in July 4th, 2008 at 6:17 pm

” and then, unlock it at a later date when ‘Three’ has iphone plans, and switch it over to them with a simple sim card swap! ”

I spoke with 3 earlier today and they don’t know yet if an unlocked 3G iPhone will be able to work on their network as they haven’t been able to test it yet.

However by the time the Optus free data expires they surely will have. Plus they are clearly trying very hard to be able to offer the handset themselves as well.

By the way - all this cap/non cap stuff - how does it relate to pre-brought phones? I can only see “cap” plans for pre-bought phones. Are there any calculations on how much more or less data is costing on the pre-bought phones if you can’t get the Yes (non-cap) plans?

Rhiannon said in July 4th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Hrm.

I was slightly taken back at the pre paid prices, but i really did expect it to be more than what Steve Jobs said it was going to be.

I’m not really sure whether or not i’m going to get the iPhone on the date it comes out.
I think i’ll have to wait for the end of the month, or a little later, to give me time to save some money for paying for the plan.

I’m 16, and haven’t got a secure job yet, but hoping for it in a couple of weeks. Then i will get a loan, for some extra money, budgeting and such.

Right now, i plan on getting a 16GB white iPhone.
On… the $29 ‘yes’ plan - 24months.
I won’t be able to afford the others, as much as i would like.
Since i’ll be saving the money i have left, to go towards my spending money for my trip to Japan next year.

The $29 ‘yes’ plan seems really good to me.
Even if it’s only $24 of talk and text…
I’ll get 100 free texts, and i don’t call that much.
(Y)

The data allowances have pissed me off.
It’s pathetic i think.

I’ve compared the pre-paid to the post-paid, on the $29 plan.

Pre-paid on the $40 turbo cap.

16GB white iphone.
$849 up front.
$40 turbo cap. includes 50MB data.

How much spent.
12months= $490 credit ($1339 all up, phone inculded.)
24months= $960 credit ($1809 all up, phone included.)

8GB black iphone.
$729 up front.
$40 turbo cap. includes 50MB data.

How much spent.
12months= $490 credit ($1219 all up, phone inculded.)
24months= $960 credit ($1689 all up, phone included.)

Alot of money all up, right?
For me anyway.

‘yes’plan.
$29 plan - 24months
16GB white iPhone.
$29 plan + $17 repayment = $46 a month.
included:
250MB data, $24 of text and call credit.

100 free texts a month.
‘rollover’ any unused call credits at the end of the month into the next month.

How much spent over 24months:

$1104

Over 12 months:

$29 plan + $52 repayment = $81 a month.
How much spent:

$972

If i got the 8GB iphone, it’d be cheaper by about $5 each month.
I think thats… fine.
Lol. $5 isn’t much.

I do believe that optus has let their customers down though.
I was expecting something more.
and i think that since Vodafone is horribly competitive, they’ll probably be cheaper, and Optus will ultimately lose customers.

I’ve been with optus for yeeeeeears on pre-paid. I’m sticking with them regardless.

gavotter333 said in July 5th, 2008 at 6:09 am

Its really funny,
I was just looking at how bad the deals for Australians will be for the iphone. Living in the USA we have had this for well a year. The whole point of an iphone is unlimited and untimed data. Thats why it was sold the way it was in the first place. Apple made the networks be compatible with visual voice mail and the like so that the phone could work to its full potential. The idea that you get capped or limited data is a very Australian thing indeed. Its a worthless commodity. Even less that worthless. You can thank telstra for the fact that there is the illusion of value.

Its pretty sad that thats the way it is but the consumer has the power to change this. Just don’t buy it from the greedy buggers.

Honestly did you really think they were going to give it away in Australia. The $199 is pretty much only for us here in the US. If you take a closer look its not really $199 here either. Thats for new customers or people eligible for an upgrade. Now it does not take a rocket scientist to know that original iphone contracts have another 12 months. So if you want it here its $399 for the 8GB version. The funny thing still is there is pretty much no 3g coverage in the USA and most people here could not care less of the 3g model.
The only reason I will get one is as in San Francisco the EDGE network has literally been crippled from the number of users and 3G will provide more nodes per cell data usage.

If you feel that your being ripped off down there in the colony’s then you are right. Everything that goes to Australia seems to have the moron tax added. It still amazes me how much you pay for, well everything. Wake up and start importing yourself. 9 times out of 10 its cheaper and you are legally allowed to do it. Has anyone herd of Amazon.com.

Enjoy using the paperweight. Anyone that did not already have it and work out how to hack it. Go for it Aussies.

There is a real reason that the smart people leave that country. It breeds a certain lack of innovation by complacency. LOL

mygif
Ignus said in July 5th, 2008 at 5:45 pm

Getting back to the Cap’d plans (Optus).

They look great, don’t they? That is until you see what the price per min is. The c/min is much higher than other carriers current plans. So the $$$ value you get out of it isn’t as good as it sounds.

Have a look at this http://www.optusiphone.com.au/getdoc/fe459345-d9c4-437d-a665-f36ec10c7cb8/pre-paid-pricing.aspx
Not sure that I’m down with the whole 78c/min.

And I’m sure the data plan issue has been beaten around enough, so add me to it too.

Come on Vodafone. Get your butt in the ring!

“I just found out that you cant plug in Apple iphone and use it as a modem. It doesn’t support that functionality”

This is true. Not that in Australia it would be much use as a modem, given the expense and paucity of data.

To get it to work as a modem you would need to jailbreak in some way. People using the 2G version seem to have got it to work.

i personally would definitely hang the expense and buy it anyway at these prices if i could, but as i student i simply can’t afford to! the only reason i realistically became interested in the iPhone is because i thought ‘finally, an amazing phone i can AFFORD’.

i was relying on it being the same or slightly more than my tax ($400) which i will get back, and as i am going overseas next year i do NOT want a plan that locks me in for twelve months. i need to by it outright so i can unlock it for use in england.

i am personally going to wait and see the other pre-paid prices, hopefully vodafone and 3 will realise if they offer the iPhone at under $500 outright, they will make a killing against optus.

if they doesn’t happen i might just think about going on ebay, or saving my money and buying one in england when i am over there myself.

mygif
iPodTouchedMe said in July 6th, 2008 at 1:54 pm

I don’t see what you people are complaining about. The people who are complaining about the $199 price, do you really think it would be that price on the iPhones first release?
I’m thinking that price is for the countries that have already had the first iPhone from the beginning.
Also, depending on your plan you’re getting, the handset CHEAPER than what steve jobs said.

The optus $79 Cap Plan is probrably the best value.
On a 24 month contract:
8GB = FREE
16GB = $48

And with the 700MB usage every month and $550 worth of calls, that is a very good deal. Along with the 35c/30sec national call rate.

Plus you get FREE 20 minute calls between 8PM-Midnight, and FREE 5 minute calls for phones on the same account, 24/7.

I’ll be getting the 16GB model on the $79 Cap Plan which will cost me $81 a month. Seriously people, if you can’t afford that, get JOBS.

mygif
jack said in July 6th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Why is Vodafone so slow in getting out its prices ?

And why does Vodafone have the most stupidiest website…i think for clarity of understanding rates/plans the best websites are

1)Three
2)Optus
3)Vodafone and Telstra (both suck)

mygif

mygif

@ben,

the price of iphone in usa is

$199 + (cost of breaking at&t contract) + (unlocking fee if any) = ???

as i earliar said, if there is a major cost discrepancy between countries ..you should get cheaper iphones on ebay

this is provided if all iphones are going to be made with similar features, software etc.

mygif
Rhiannon said in July 6th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

@iPodTouchedMe.

I know people are kicking up a fuss about the price, but the reality is a good PDA, iPhone or other, will cost you $800+ outright. If you really can’t afford that, and can’t claim it on taxes, then maybe you should ask yourself “do i really need a PDA?”. I know I LIVE on my PDA for work reasons. As cool as the iPhone is, if I didn’t use it for work, I wouldn’t buy one. Personally, I can’t wait to purchase the new 3G iPhone and but my old iPhone back into it’s box :-)

gormster said in July 6th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

Hahaha, what the fuck? Man, vodafone better have something better to offer than that. Because seriously, I don’t use my phone that much, and I just want a good data rate. That’s literally it.

So, seriously, I hope that VF will give me that.

Rhianon,

if you complain about the price of a luxury car at luxury car owners forum, you will get these kind of feedbacks

“if you can’t afford, just buy other car mate”

“yeah, it’s kinda pricy but I bought it few days ago”

“What’s the point of your compliant? blaming the manufacture ? or blaming your life?”

Likewise,

why would you waste your time whining about the price? If you can’t afford it, just go for other one. Or save up some money

Apple and other telcos are not dumbs or charity organisations… I’m sick of YOU people don’t understand what Steve said and what the real life is.

I know pretty much everyone here is badly after the iPhone but in same sense, I still haven’t got my Ferrari… I bought way cheaper car which I could afford instead of swearing at rich people.

and boys,

get back to school now if you failed to convince your parents.

People get over the fact of the $199, if any of you thought that Apple would offer you that device for that price you are crazy. It was always a subsidised price. What you really should be concerned with is the fact that we dont have an unlimited data plan at the moment, lets hope that telstra/vodfone come up with the goods.

Don’t get me wrong Optus has good plans, however i would like what the rest of the world is getting a unlimited plan for around $60

mygif
M said in July 7th, 2008 at 10:05 am

I think unlimited data would never happen … even you can hardly find unlimited broadband plan. Well, the Broadband and 3G network is based on different infrastructure so they should cost differently. However, the wireless is regarded as more expensive.. so you won’t get unlimited data unless you pay like few hundred bucks. Well, this is only my assumption… but don’t want to see you guys disappointed.

funny thing is some bastards are already selling iphone 3g on eBay and even charging $80 for unlocking… wtf… They have no idea what is going to happen… sad people

So can someone please tell me how this whole thing is going to work?? As far as I know we still don’t know exactly what stores are stocking the phone on the day, I have pre-ordered but assume I am still going to have to queue. Will they be releasing them in regional areas or the city only? I wish they would hurry up and release the details of how it is all going to work!

mygif
M said in July 7th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

I guess there won’t be a exclusive shop only stocks iPhone on that day. I believe pretty much all shops would have stocks. When I talked to telstra guy I asked him for the location where I can pick it up on 11th July and he said “any telstra shop.” It’s not quite 100% right as he was only telemarketing person.

mygif
Loz said in July 7th, 2008 at 2:24 pm

Hey does anyone know if it is true that Optus has “scrapped” or it was just never going to happen the priority queuing for people that placed a deposit??? I did hear it was untrue but not sure!! Thanks

mygif
Ben said in July 7th, 2008 at 2:51 pm

OMG

VODAFONE ARE YOU LISTENING!!?

Release the damn prices already before you lose all of your potential iPhone customers to Optus ffs!

mygif
Ben said in July 7th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Get this, I went into Vodafone and the dude working there said, “Hopefully we’ll have pricing after Friday”.

So, they’re going to release the phone on Friday and release the prices AFTER Friday?

Hopefully that dude is just a dumb shit (it’s more than likely)…

Have they? I checked the Vodafone NZ website and there was nothing there regarding prices…

Hit us up with a link or some more info if you have it.

Optus stopped taking deposits after overwhelming volume of callers.. 4000+ i believe..

I havent heard anything of them not honouring the deal for people who paid the deposit and if they do not I would assume there will be an influx of pissed off people who have lost $50-$100 for a month for nothing and the interest Optus have made..

Its about time these f*ckers realised we are the customer.. They did send an e-mail out last week surveying what type of phone you may want to buy.

mygif
brockyoz said in July 7th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

I got that email, then it appears there was another one sent out or maybe I just missed it, where they asked you to input a postcode for store details. However it still stated that just because there was a store near your postcode, they weren’t necessarily going to stock the phones there.

im on 29 cap with 3 for another 3 months.
plus the added 22 dollars for my n73 which died about 5 months ago.

im really considering changing to optus this friday on release. i cannot wait for 3 to finally get around to bringing the iphone out.

the only thing is i wont have the same number!
it isnt possible to change ur number a few months into your plan is it??

mygif
ryan said in July 8th, 2008 at 2:00 am

The plans are idiotic. Who needs $1500 worth of calls? Talk about missing the entire point.

mygif
oticon6 said in July 8th, 2008 at 4:51 am

Internet idiocy never ceases to amaze me… these are good prices. In a very short time, we’ve come from paying 1.1-2.2c/KB of shitty GPRS data to having 250MB on a $49 cap… not long ago you’d pay that for the calls and no data at all… and at 35c/MB for extra data, this is about the same as a lot of BROADBAND plans… the way things are going, network cabling may become obsolete in favour of cellular internet. Makes sense given the sparse population in this country.

And to the idiots saying “OMG STEVE I FUCKING HATE YOU YOU SAID $199″… well guess what? We’re paying $0. This was an UPFRONT COST and ALWAYS on the condition of a contract.. But because Apple has allowed competition in Australia, Optus has taken the plunge and brought a phone better than most PDAs and brought it to the mid-range consumer market. Thumbs up to them.. and if Vodafone doesn’t release their prices soon, I’m going to get sick of waiting.

mygif
dpearman said in July 8th, 2008 at 9:47 am

Ben, sorry all they have got is something like telstra, i am assuming that only registered users are getting the full price info.

** on a different matter, just got off the phone from telstra and they are all saying that they will not be releasing prices for plans until the release date!(hope that is not true) Are they totally F#$$%@! Lets send them a message all all go for optus!

mygif
M said in July 8th, 2008 at 9:56 am

some people might need it

don’t just look at it from your point of view only

mygif
M said in July 8th, 2008 at 10:06 am

zmac// you will get same number don’t worry. I once switched from 3 to Optus in the middle of contract (since I got sick of their poor reception quality) and I got same number

I agree with oticon6 … it’s still good deal … 2years ago I used GPRS internet few times… it was just checking TEXT based email stuff .. then I ended up with $95 INTERNET COST !!! just for the internet use … well, I was totally pissed off but the GPRS kinda saved my ass so.. didn’t really complain about it

NOW WITHIN $89 plan … you get 850MB data… what a good deal.. for those of you who are used to BROADBAND internet and never used mobile interbet before, say thanks.

mygif
brockyoz said in July 8th, 2008 at 10:12 am

death I agree with you… I am checking my emails constantly to see if Optus have released stores and details yet. I am happy with the Optus plans, I just want to make sure I can get my phone on the day of release! Considering I am driving 4 hours from the country it would be nice to know if we are driving to Melbourne or Ballarat, what time we might have to queue, and where the bloody hell that will be! The only problem I realised this morning is I am paying off another handset that I lost, I hope they will still let me get the iPhone and pay that off at the same time!

mygif
istara said in July 8th, 2008 at 10:31 am

Well the NZ prices are SHOCKING - to get 1gb of data the cost is $250 a month!

The only slim upside to that is that excess data is then $0.03c a mb (wonder if that is a typo though) - that works out to $30/gig which sounds bearable if still a rip off compared to global international plans.

Buying the phone outright and just buying data: you can get 1gb for $50 a month (so that’s half the price Optus Aus is charging - however there are no calls in that deal) but then the excess charges are $0.50c a minute.

Lose-lose from my perspective.

The business community seems pretty pissed off about these prices, they already get stung enough with overseas roaming charges. I am hoping they will pressure the industry to get the data prices down.

mygif
basques said in July 8th, 2008 at 10:58 am

OMG $250 per month and you still have to pay $350 for a 16gb? They gotta be kidding me.

http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/B342B5E9622426ECCC25747F007B3574

Vodafone has announced its local pricing for the iPhone 3G.
The 8GB iPhone will be available for on-account customers with a 1GB monthly data cap for NZ$199 on a two-year contract. The 16GB phone costs $349 on the same plan. The cost per month of the plan is $250.

On the lowest data plan, 250MB per month, the up-front cost of the 8GB iPhone is $549, while the 16GB costs $699. The cost per month of the plan is $80.

An intermediate plan, 500MB per month, will see the 8GB model available for $449 and the 16GB model at $599. The cost per month of the plan is $130.

Vodafone’s local website appears to have succumbed to traffic and has been down for around an hour. International media is covering the local iPhone action intensely as we are the first to see the launch of the new 3G model of the iPhone.

The phone is officially launched here at 12.01 Friday morning.

Those prices are shocking!!!
Although hopefully they’ll be better in Australia due to the competition (Optus).
If Vodafone release Australian prices similar to those in NZ then I doubt they’ll get any iPhone customers at all…

brockyoz said in July 8th, 2008 at 12:01 pm

If there is a 12:01 release death what time do you think you will queue? Doesn’t Optus know I am trying to make dinner plans the same night! lol iPhone takes priority of course!!

mygif
brockyoz said in July 8th, 2008 at 1:07 pm

My friend and I are that desperate death we are even refreshing this page to see if you had written back! lol We are in a spot of bother having to travel 4 hours, we don’t want to drive to Melbourne then find out that they are releasing it closer to us. We are more than prepared to queue up preferably not earlier than Thursday morning. I expect there will be a 12:01 release for us in Oz, if they are doing that in NZ. Here’s hoping there is enough stock to go around. I imagine that because Optus closed their pre-orders they would have to at least have the stock to fill those. But like you say, it isn’t just a quick process of walking in buying it and walking out, will take at least 15 minutes or so per customer. Well we will just keep checking the emails eh… Thank god for school holidays to allow me to do that! lol

mygif
brockyoz said in July 8th, 2008 at 1:33 pm

@Spodee that’s a good mum! Mine offered to get it for me for my birthday which isn’t until October, and I’m bloody 27!! lol Has anyone tried to call a particular Optus store and try and get it out of them whether or not they are going to stock them? I might try it.. Particularly in the country areas they might fall for it! hehe (I’m from the country so I can say that!)

mygif
brockyoz said in July 8th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

I have pre-ordered but I still think we are going to have to queue! Agghh! Put us out of our misery!

brockyoz said in July 8th, 2008 at 2:26 pm

@death LOVE YOUR WORK!!! My friend was trying to work out if adult diapers is going too far should we need to queue and she needs the toilet! (Joking of course!) I just called Ballarat and it appears they are opening early, but they haven’t received their stock yet. Will call them Thursday and see if they have got it then might just head there. Thinking the queues will be smaller there than Melbourne. Doesn’t sound like even the Optus staff know much about it, I think everyone is being kept in the dark! Just tell your girlfriend if you get your iPhone you will jump on the net on it and order her some flowers for putting up with you! She will understand!

mygif
M said in July 8th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Good news to those of you paid deposit…

I lost the chance. When I went to the web page to put deposit, it was already gone…. damn!!

mygif
istara said in July 8th, 2008 at 5:52 pm

so despite the fact that non-Optus customers paid twice as much for priority queuing, we have to wait until the next day?

Apple and other telcos are not dumbs or charity organisations… I’m sick of YOU people don’t understand what Steve said and what the real life is. ”

And I’m sick of fucking morons like M who think that holding corporations accountable to publicly made promises is nothing more than whining from people who want everything for nothing.

Let me try to put it in as simple terms as I can: the “whining” is not about the price, but about the massive deception Jobs pulled, the shameless misinformation he put out as part of a hype campaign. Watch the WWDC keynote address: NOWHERE in his announcement that the iPhone was to sell at no more than $US199 does he state or even imply that that price would be part of a plan. Even if it seems “obvious” that that price comes as part of a plan, what does that mean? a $10-a-month plan or $250-a-month plan? Would you still be attacking the “whiners” if it were the latter?

I speak as someone who can afford and will probably take up the Optus $49 Cap on a 24 month contract, but who is offended nevertheless by the hypocrisy and disingenuousness shown by Jobs and by Apple generally in trading on a false image of corporate philanthropy (in the form of promising iphones at prices affordable for everyone) for the sake of boosting publicity.

Hi All,

have had these really strange conversations with my two Optus worls stores. They are saying that there will be no iphones at all for any just walking in. People who pre-registered (not with a deposit) and have a code were meant to allocate a store will their iphone will be and you just pick it up. The phone is specific to you because of the code.

I rang optus and they said both the optus worlds have got it wrong. Anyone can just turn up and get one! Man, what is really frustrating is that it seems no one knows what is going on! Also speaking to some people i know who work for apple, good luck getting them as there is going to be hardly any stock!

fingers crossed for all!

mygif
loz said in July 10th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

I was speaking to a guy in the optus store in Perth today and he said its good luck to anyone that can get one and that the shipment of them is SO limited!! so everyone who has gone and pre-ordered probably will miss out and you have to wait another 2 weeks for the next order!!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM
why take pre-orders if there not going to fill many of them????? This is all starting to suck!!!

mygif
loz said in July 10th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Also he said that you would recive another email for pre-orders telling you what store to go to and that was ment to come today!!
