iPhone 3G. 10 things we don’t know about you.

- How much does it cost?
- What carriers (Optus + Vodafone, but others are rumored to be coming along to join the fun)?

I reckon that $200 is an impossible price for Australia considering that itouch (which is iphone without the phone) costs $400-500.
I found a post earlier, where someone had gone to the Australian Apple Online Store, and under iPhone 3G There was a price of $249
Unfortunately, after going through my history many times I cant find the link
1. steve jobs said that the iphone 8gb will not cost any more than US$199 anywhere (thats AU$209).
He didn’t say this about the 16gb, but US$299 = AU$314. there will be a prepay, but i imagine it to come at a extra price
2. on launch day? July 11? - only vodafone and optus, but othere may join in later (2009+)
4. due to the carrier giving apple a one of payment, iphone 3g’s will only be sold in vodafone & Optus stores (no retailers or online). This is due to the fact that it is now the carriers responsibility to sell a contract with the iphone, if they don’t, the carrier still has to pay apple and there’s no plan.
5. there will be a prepay iphone, but i imagine it will be carrier locked and more expensive as the ones on plan
6. most probably 1gb data transfer + maybe a unlimited plan
8. positive - vodafone will be selling the iphone in 11 countries, i’m sure they’ve worked it out.

according to australian consumer law, providing the end user agrees to the term of the contracted deal, the provider (i.e. Vodafone) must unlock the phone at NO COST to the user.
spoke to a guy at a comp now store (which is an apple reseller store) last week & he said that they were going to be selling the iphone through their store.. said he had been in negotiations with vodafone that day & will email me when he knows anything more.. i’m sure they’ll be selling them as optus phones as well..
and with telstra (apparently) jumping into the game as of yesterday.. it will prove very interesting competition.. especially with them (apparently) not going to release the iphone under the 22nd.. which will give them the opportunity to strategically price their deals.. making the market for iphones ultra competitive
I can only hope it won’t cost me $800-$1000 to purchase one on prepaid, however, i’m not holding my breath

@anon Okay, I’ve been doing some research into prices and on the US apple store the ipod touch costs$299 which is the same price as the 16GB 3g iPhone. For the Aus store the iPod touch costs $399 which is (in US currency, almost the same nowadays) is $100 more than the American 3g iphone and the american ipod touch.
So I don’t think comparing is going to get us too far…
I’ve thought it’s either going to jump in price right before release (unlikely), the iPod touch price will drop before release (maybe) or it’s this price with the plan (confirmed in US) so it will even it’s self out from the iPod touch after the lock in time (2 years in America if anyone wants to work that out and see how much, go for it.) last but not least obviously if that’s the plan price, in Australia if you can by with prepay it’ll cost a hell of allot more because you won’t be playing the lock in plan price, this hasn’t been announced yet because it’s not a US function so it woulsn’t be mentioned in keynote.

I’ve read a lot about the new iPhone 3g..
And i really, really want one.
Even though there are a few ‘bad’ things about it.
Like how the Camera is only 2.0 megapixels, and doesn’t have autofocus or a flash.
(That doesn’t bother me reeeeeeeally..)
But, the fact that it doesn’t record video, annoys me a little.
And, that 3g is known for the ‘video calling’ feature.
But with the iPhone, apple hasn’t included a front camera for the feature.
There is SO MUCH speculation about how much the plans are going to cost, and whether or not getting it on pre-pay is going to cost more.
I really think it is ridiculous.
They should have the information out already.
Why are they being so secretive?
No one likes secrets.
Oh, and the MobileMe feature…
That is going to cost as around $100, for a yearly subscription.
Like, c’mon apple.. you rip offs.
I can tell there is going to be so much money that is going to go into this, they’ve halved the prices, because they were worried that they wouldn’t get many sales, yet, with all the extra costs, it’s going to end up the same.
And they know people are going to buy it anyway.
I live in a small town..
It’s going to be hard to find an Optus shop around here.
Another ridiculous thing is that it has to be activated in store.

Australian resellers are not getting the iPhone they are more like getting closed down than getting new gadgets lol yay losing my job!! Lol
I heard from a reliable source that Apple Store Syd will be selling iPhone with no contract (outright). I also heard other carriers will be selling it fairly quickly.
I can confirm that anon, i was there at open and they will be selling it unlocked, but no announcement on price

i was chatting to my ‘reliable’ rep at simms, distributor for apple to smaller resellers. he stated that *WINK WINK* *NUDGE*NUDGE* the iphone will be on exclusive release to optus and vodafone, with the *wink*wink* possibility of outright/pre-pay sales in apple resellers after a few months. EXPECT A RUSH FOR CHRISTMAS, once you hear that announcement you need to preorder. ! don’t know if that is ipod resellers or apple resellers only
There is no doubt in my mind that the out right pre-paid iphones will cost more.
From what i can see, they haven’t released the plans yet.. ? If someone knows other wise, let me know please. (:
let me tell you something, especially for people who whining about lack of mega pixels in digital camera.
yes, iphone only has 2 mega pixels whilest current mobile phones usually come with 4, 5 or even 8 mega pixels… but have you even considered how good their quality is ???
number of pixels only determine size of image. As image sensors in mobile phones are damn small, they usually use a ‘blown-up’ mega pixel .. it’s pretty similar algorithm with JPEG where image processor GUESS and COMPENSATE pixels with GUESSED information. So I wouldn’t care about how many PIXELS there are on these kind of tiny devices. I’d rather care about how GOOD the pixel quality is …
iPhone is reasonably thin device which you cannot really expect AUTO focusing mechanism and flash unit. As a semi-professional photographer, I’d rather not have flash and auto focus lens… unless they are good… If I really want to take NICE photo with iphone, I’d use some external lighting devices… well.. only if I really want to …
Even if Apple could squeeze those into the iphone… they wouldn’t be good enough to use… it’s then such a waste of material, time and space. the lens in iphone has quite deep depth of field as most tiny digital cameras lenses do. so auto focus is not an issue as long as you keep minimum distance from subject.
Flash…. most flash units in mobile phones are just rubbish… I’ve seen few good ones .. but the size of mobile phones were like size of digital cameras…
I’m not saying camera in iphone is superb but .. it’s providing responsible quality of image considering its size and mega pixels… well.. noise in low light condition can be an issue though. I personally believe its camera is more responsible and reliable than any other cameras with the “blown-up” mega pixel.
I used to have only 2 mega pixel digital SLR camera until last year .. tonal range of the camera was .. just superb… honestly it was better than beginner range DSLR cameras with 8 or 10 mega pixels and any other mini digital cameras with more pixels.
i read in ZOO magazine that optus will sell the iphone for $200 on a contract plan, $250 on prepaid…. seems ridiculously cheap
