Rumours abound about launch of Apple 3G handsets
By Barrie Parsons

Rumours about the launch of a 3G iPhone have sprung up in several countries.
The technology market is awash with reports that Apple has ordered 10 million new 3G handsets to be released in the next few months.

A News Corporation report suggests Australians may be amongst the first to receive the next-generation iPhone model later this year.

The current iPhone model operates only on the 2.5G network‚ which has slower data speeds than 3G. All Australian carriers support both networks simultaneously‚ except for 3 which is 3G-only.

Apple is notoriously tight-lipped about release dates and has confirmed only that a 3G iPhone will be released‚ according to News Corp sources.

Technology news website Wired reported rumours that Apple has ordered 10 million 3G handsets on top of an existing order for 10 million first-generation models‚ based on an analyst's anonymous source.

Apple to sell 10 million iPhones in 2008
However‚ Apple's chief operating officer Tim Cook said in February that the company was on track to sell 10 million iPhones this year.

Last November‚ a manager for Spanish mobile carrier Telefonica told technology blog Sevenclick that the company expects to be distributing the 3G iPhone by May.

Spain‚ like Australia‚ missed out on the original iPhone release last year. If the Telefonica rumour is true‚ then Spain could be one of the first countries to receive the 3G iPhone.

Apple has scheduled an Australian iPhone release for 2008 but has not confirmed if this will involve the new 3G model.

Local networks Telstra‚ Optus‚ and Vodafone are all in hot contention to be the official iPhone carrier when it is released here‚ according to the News report.
Channel News Asia reports that SingTel‚ the parent company of Optus‚ will release the iPhone in September.

Earlier this month‚ Telstra dominated iPhone rumours after its search company Sensis placed an iPhone job advertisement. The position was a 3-month contract to help design search applications.

A Vodafone spokesman said last year the company expected the Australian iPhone release to coincide with a new 3G model.

"Vodafone would be surprised to see an iPhone released in Australia before a 3G or HSPA-enabled model becomes available‚" the spokesman told reporters.

They'll probably release the iPhone on the same day the Sydney Apple store opens in June. This should double the hype.

I have an Iphone I brought from the USA. It is to die for. Problem is, I'd never have Telstra, so I am happy with my hacked Optus one.

Now that they have announced the SDK and V2 of the iPhone software for July release, I doubt we'll be getting a 3G phone before that.
And that means no EDGE phone either as who in their right mind will sign on for 2 years for a phone about to be replaced in 4 months!
Apple and Telstra blew it. It should have been released before christmas in this country.

hahaha i doubt it will be out before the end of the year, knowing apple's latest track record (e.g. rental movies fall short of 1000, Macbook Air not arriving till 3 weeks late and still in dribs and drabs, Time Capsule only just being released a few days ago[well late of announced date]). BUT in saying all that I still LOVE APPLE!
