According to Crazy John’s head of sales and marketing Stephen Morley we won’t be seeing the iPhone in Australia any time soon. “I don’t believe the product is imminent here in Australia,” Mr Morley was quoted saying in a recent newsletter.
Vodafone has said it expected the Australian release date to be delayed until the 3G model was available. This does make allot of sense since 3G has hit major saturation points in most capital cities and is much faster than EDGE which is only available on Telstra.
Last October Telstra chief executive Sol Trujillo said the carrier had been in talks with Apple, but there have been no confirmations from Apple or other networks about an Australian deal.

I’ve already posted in the iPhone forum, but me thinks we are all making too much of 3G.
If (and that’s a big if) there are battery life issues with 3G iPhones, how come Nokia and other handset makers can make a product with longer battery life than Apple?
3G data costs for simply browsing the web are hideously expensive. Nay prohibitively expensive. That is why the iPhone has wi-fi. You would use EDGE (or even 3G for that matter) only when you had to. If you needed to do any serioius surfing, you would find a hot spot.
That is why I believe Telstra are clearly the front runner, as they have wireless hot spots everywhere.
Telstra just have to wrap their heads around a new way of doing business with the people who pay them… their customers.
We want an iPhone and the thing has sold nearly 5 million units around the world, so I wouldn’t expect Apple to bend over for the small market that is Australia and create a 3G phone just for us (Actually, it would probably also be for Japan, but that is another issue altogether. We would be piggy backing on the Japanese phone)
Get over 3G. Tell Apple you’ll buy one now. You know you will.
And you’ll use EDGE or whatever network and get used to finding hot spots and you’ll love the phone.
I know, I’ve played with one…

It was not a newsletter, it was a report on news.com.au.

GOD DAMN IT!!! *I apologies for the blasphemy* its starting to get on the wrong side of a year now that the iPhone hasn’t been released here. All my friends and I want one but we don’t wanted some hacked thing although for me personally thats starting to become tempting… does the unlocked iPhone from France and Germany work with all our (AUS) sim cards as well??
Actually no, it was from a newsletter. Both News.com.au and we quoted Stephen Morely from the December issue of Crazy John’s “Crazy Talk” newsletter.
I think the fact that carriers other than telstra are trying to sign people up for 2 year data plans now is a clear sign telstra has the contract and they are waiting for stock levels to improve before releasing here.(US and Euro first)
Telstra don’t want or need a 3G phone. They will want to sign people up to BigPond so they will use their own wireless hotspots at qantas club and maccas.
They could be crazy and wait for a 3G version, but they would be better served releasing it now as 2.5G and re-releasing as 3G when it is available.
I hate Telstra more than I love Apple. I’d rather use two tins and a piece of string than anything on the Telstra network. Personally, I’d wait for the 5G version if it meant I didn’t have to deal with those thieving, arrogant morons. Please, please, please Apple - anyone other than Telstra.
