Ok, so your desperate to get your dirty paws all over the hottest new gadget, the iPhone. Well we here at iPhone Australian Edition care for you so much, we have put a list together to help you import.
1 - Go to the US, or have a relative/freind send you it. Slightly expensive if you haven’t got a holiday planned, but if you are going, why not buy one. Or if you know someone overthere, ask them if they will pop into their local apple store and pick one up for you. Cost= iPhone ($400 US + local tax) + Postage (about $40 Us i think, only if you’re having someone send it over), Total= $440 US + US local tax (about $515 AU)
2 - Mac-Pro.com. An american site, will post to Australia. Cost= iPhone ($490 US) + P&P ($40 US), Total= $530 US ($620 AU)
3 - eBay, .com or .com.au (.com.au recommended). Prices Vary from about $650+, dont get to ripped off, however much you want one.
So in conclusion, option 1 is the best, but not easy for most, then option 2 or 3, I cannot gaurantee that Mac-Pro.com is a good site, so it is really up to you. Post your experiences or where you bought yours from below.

Hello there Jack. I’m a fellow Australian living in Japan. I have a new iPhone coming from America next week and in preparation I’m looking for a safe and reliable “activation” app. I don’t think I’ll bother actually “unlocking” it until either the iPhone is released in Japan or I move back to Australia.
I’m assuming that the term “activation” refers only to tricking the phone into thinking it’s activated with at&t so that everything but the phone part works. If I’ve got this wrong please let me know.
So, my questions for you are these:
- I assume that when you first got your iPhone you activated it and the unlocking came much later. Which activation app did you use?
- Is there a particular activation app you would recommend (if you know of something better than what you originally used?)?
- Is there anything else I should know about the whole procedure? From everything I’ve read it seems safe to assume that I don’t need anything done to the phone before it leaves America. I should be able to do the “activation” trick from here in Japan.
- Also, if I did want to “unlock” the phone to use as an actual phone (perhaps in Australia), would I first need to have a real actual at&t account in America? From everything I’ve read I suspect the answer is no but I thought I should triple-check.
Thanks!
Hey Anonymoustache (lovin’ the name by the way)
In response to your questions. To activate I would recommend iBrickr for Windows and iNdependence for Mac. It is very easy to do and you can get the files with a quick search on google. Also to unlock it, there is no need to hold a US AT&T account, just follow the instructions at hacktheiphone.com,
Good Luck,
Jack
Hi Jack,
Thanks for your reply. I thought that’s how it would work. Unfortunately I now have another problem!
I have a friend in America at the moment who is coming to Japan in a few days. I asked him to buy an iPhone for me before he leaves. Because I’m in Japan I won’t be using an iPhone as a phone, only as an iPod. I don’t want an at&t account.
My friend in America tells me that he went to an at&t store and two Apple stores and all of them said that he can’t buy an iPhone without signing up for a 2 year at&t contract at the same time.
I specifically told him to tell any sales people that he would sign up for an at&t account using iTunes and that he doesn’t want to sign up for an at&t account in the store at the time of purchasing the phone. My friend says that they wouldn’t allow him to do that and that his only option was to sign up for an at&t account at the same time as buying the iPhone.
From everything I’ve read over the months about people buying an iPhone it sounds like these sales people are just lying to him to try to get him to get an at&t account.
Has anybody else experienced this or does anybody know of a way to get the staff to allow you to buy a phone and get the at&t account later? Have the rules changed? Why does iTunes have an option for online at&t activation if it can’t be used (except perhaps for iPhones bought through the online store)?
Another thing that surprised me is that two of the Seattle Apple stores said that they don’t stock iPhones and that he would need to go to an at&t store to buy an iPhone. I thought that all Apple stores stocked iPhones. Am I wrong?
to anonymoustache, my friends in the states all bought the iphone from att outlets and were never asked to sign up. they doin sumthin rong. ask ur friend to try more att stores or just order it online from apple.com. u can easily activate the iphone using the wInstaller application with 1 click. just google it and dl.
